General Info
In addition to electing four sabbatical officers the Union
also elects a number of part-time, unpaid positions who make
up the additional members of Student Government, Campus Committees
and the Executive as well as NUS delegates:
Student
Government & Student Governor
The Student Governor is directly elected and chairs Student
Government meetings on a part-time, voluntary basis. He is
also automatically a student representative on the University's
Board of Governors along with the President.
Student
Government is the premier debating chamber of the Students'
Union. This means that Government is MUSU's principle decision
making body.
It
meets three times per semester and has around 39 voting members
drawn from the Executive Committee, Campus Committees and
Student Reps. There are also directly elected positions. Apart
from the Executive Committee these positions operate on a
voluntary, part-time basis.
This
committee has the principle responsibility of ensuring that
the Executive Committee is held to account and that Students'
Union policy is passed and upheld.
All
students have the right to attend Student Government meetings.
Liberation Officers
The positions of Black Students' Officer, Women's Officer,
Disabled Students' Officer, LGBT Students' Officer, International
Students' Officer and Mature Students' Officer have been established
as liberation positions. The purpose of these is to provide
a specific representative voice for students from historically
underrepresented groups.
At MUSU, these officers will sit on the Executive, giving
them a voice on the day-to-day decision making body of the
Union. They will also sit on Student Government, which is
the principle debating chamber and policy-making body of the
Union.
To stand for a liberation position, you must self-define into
the relevant group. The Union will not ask for any type of
proof that you are a certain kind of student, but asks that
you understand the opportunity profile and the ethos behind
the positions.
In order to give these officers a real constituency, only
students who self-define into these groups shall be eligible
to vote for the officers.

Campus
Committees
Each Campus Committee has a Campus Chair. The Campus Chair
is a member of the Executive Committee as well as relevant
campus-based committees.
S/he is responsible for calling open Campus Meetings and Campus
Committee meetings at least once every two weeks. The Campus
Chair chairs these meetings and arranges for the distribution
of publicity with the help of the campus administrator.
The
Campus Chair is also expected to attend Executive Committee
Meetings, which are held once two weeks and also the Student
Government held three times every semester.
Each
campus has its own Campus Committee. It consists of nine members,
one of which is the Campus Chair, plus the sabbatical officer(s)
for that campus. The role of the committee is to feed students'
campus-specific problems into Student Government via the sabbatical
officers and to communicate the decisions of Student Government
to students. They also help to solve difficulties and make
recommendations to Student Government.
The
Chair of each Campus Committee is also a member of the Executive
Committee.
Campus
Committees can call open campus meetings.
The
Campus Committee has responsibility for promoting the Union's
campaign work at campus level.
The
Campus Committee has the right to carry out campus-based campaigns
as long as they do not contravene Union policy or run in opposition
to existing Union campaigns.
National
Union of Students (NUS) Delegates
Every year, usually in April, NUS holds its Annual Conference.
Every affiliated students' union in the country is eligible
to send a delegation. MUSU's delegation currently stands at
12 plus the President, who is automatically the delegation
leader. This is a national student forum. Students discuss
issues that are specific to student life as well as national
and international political issues, such as the war in Iraq.
Conference elects the national officers and passes policy
that will guide the organisation for the coming year.
NUS
also holds regional conferences and conferences for women,
black students, lesbian gay and transgender students and students
with disabilities. MUSU has recently agreed to elect part-time
student officers to send to NUS Women's Conference and NUS
Black Students Conference. There are plans to also make provision
to elect officers to send to NUS LGBT and SWD conferences.
